Women Learning To Shoot: A Guide for Law Enforcement officers

Diane Nicholl

Diane Nicholl grew up where guns were common. She has enjoyed shooting from the time she was ten years old and would go plinking with a .22 single shot rifle. She worked in the field of neurophysiology for 15 years before starting her own business, DTI Publications, Inc. where she teaches firearms courses and publishes firearms training books.

In the early 1990’s, Diane started the Annie Oakley Society as a way to help women maintain and improve their shooting skills by providing monthly access to a range. She soon discovered that several female officers in her area were having trouble passing their weapons qualifications so she started offering private and group sessions for them.

Diane is an NRA Training Counselor. She has done extensive research on the use of firearms in crime and self-defense. She is a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI), the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA), the Colorado Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors Association (CLEFIA) and Rocky Mountain Women In Law Enforcement (RMWLE).

Vicki Farnam

Vicki Farnam has been teaching fireams with her husband, John Farnam, of Defense Training International, Inc. since 1986. They travel all across the country. She has taught defensive shooting classes for women only and classes for instructors about teaching women. Those classes have been for non-law enforcement as well as law enforcement on local, state and federal levels.

She has ten years experience developing and instructing adult education programs prior to that time. She is vice-president of Defense Training International, Inc., an NRA certified instructor and a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors (IALEFI). She has presented several courses at the annual IALEFI conference on gender learning differences.

She has contributed articles to "Police Marksman" and other firearms publications.
